The ridiculous state of the American healthcare system is best illustrated through the television show Breaking Bad, where an ex-teacher turns to producing meth to pay for his medical bills. 60% of personal bankruptcy fillings each year is related to medical bills alone. With hidden costs and unpublicised differences from centre to centre, it’s hard to know how much we should be paying for our healthcare. 57% of patients don’t know that prices vary! Faircare is trying to change that.
Faircare is a free app that advocates for “medical cost transparency by making prices available to everyone.” Founded in 2014, Faircare Inc. have uncovered tens of billions of medical claims nationwide. The app displays the lowest, highest, and average price for each procedure in the user’s zip code or area through crowdsourcing and machine learning. Users can also anonymously upload their Explanation of Benefits (EOB) into the app to view an individualised result.
